I don’t think surveillance is foremost in investors’ minds, but it could be one of the outcomes. Investors have one goal: making money. Governments have one goal: weaponizing AI faster and better than their enemies. Sure, some governments view their own populations, or segments thereof, as enemies, so it is likely AI will be brought to bear there. It’s crucial to reverse the flow of money into politics.
So far overall trends are moving into Digital Gulag globally.
ChatControl 1.0 just passed, and eventually 2.0 wil be passed or implemented by corporations as precaution against some fines.
The requirement to “show your passport or ID” to some digital doorkeeper to get access to internet, with de-anonymization of it, wil be result of “age checks” laws.
Now these datacenters being pushed into society throat with cancelling any norms like zone planning, noize and pollution limits and anything else that can prevent building this infrastructure.
People protesting against that peacefully are being pushed put of city council meetings (at least know about 1 such precendent).
UK declared these buildings for data centers “defence infrastructure”.
It all this does not give me too much of reasons for optimism.
I think I may need to learn live either without internet or I will have to download all I need. Another option is to live in classic infosec risk models like “all my digital devices are compromised by persistent treat actor with state level of resources”.
Not that I would did something bad without this knowledge, but may be I would not discuss some possibilities online.
