Indian workers are earning $3/hour teaching robots how to do their jobs.

Workers wear head-mounted cameras and motion-tracking sensors while performing activities such as washing dishes, cutting mangoes, folding clothes, and handling textile work. The recordings are used to teach robots how humans move and interact with objects.

The data is being collected by Objectways, whose clients reportedly include Fortune 500 companies. Some workers record up to 90 clips per day, with each clip lasting around four minutes.

A subcontractor, Qanat Consulting Services, manages roughly 2,000 workers who wear tracking bands on their limbs to capture movement data. According to CEO Ravi Shankar, some jobs need to be automated so people can focus on more useful work.

In reality this means more people would become jobless. Just because nobody really can describe what millions of people who will lose their simple jobs due automation will do. What these “more useful work” jobs are? This is not likely to be coding or copyrighting as these jobs are automated already. And what they would do and while they would pay bills while learning to do a new jobs, while they learning this mystical “more useful work”?

When billions of people will become jobless or poor due lower salaries, they will be possible to buy less of anything. Economy would keep shrinking and collapse into zero.

This will be total catastrophe.

    One thing that often gets overlooked is that the workers creating these training datasets are also providing the knowledge that eventually reduces demand for similar kinds of labor. At the same time, history shows automation can create new types of work, but the transition is rarely smooth, so the bigger question is who pays for retraining and supports people during that gap.

      Each iteration of automation creates new job which less people can do. Less people needed to perform these new duties.
      This iteration, though, completely different – people creating data that would eventually eliminate the whole professions over time.
      And it is not obvious what kind of new jobs this wave of automation would create, if ever. Because if you need instead of 100 workers who would do cleaning would come 20-30 workers who would dispatch 150-210 cleaning robots in the morning and collect them in the evening and do some service over this automated equipment, it does not mean that these jobs would not be automated away too with new generation of robots which would arrive to the location and return to the HQ for automated service & repairs, So even these new 20-30 jobs would be automated away eventually, without a creation of some new jobs in process.
